Substitute Teaching in the Shelby County School System

STEP 1:        


Becoming a Substitute Teacher for the Shelby County Educational Service Center

The Shelby County Educational Service Center maintains a list of qualified potential substitute teachers & instructional aides to work in the seven local districts of Shelby County - Anna, Botkins, Fairlawn, Fort Loramie, Hardin-Houston, Jackson Center, and Russia - and in ESC classrooms located throughout the county.

This list serves as the source of information for the building principals in securing substitutes.

To sign up for substitute teaching, you will need to follow the steps below:

  • Print the forms found in the Packet for Substitute Teaching
  • Read and complete the forms
  • Call Jana Barhorst to schedule an appointment - (937) 498-1354, ext. 7002

Becoming a Substitute Instructional Aide for the Shelby County Educational Service Center

The Shelby County Educational Service Center maintains a list of qualified potential substitute instructional aides to work in ESC classrooms located throughout the county.  Multiple Disabilities Classrooms (Botkins and Jackson Center) and Opportunity School Classrooms (Sidney High School)

To sign up to work as a substitute instructional aide:

  • Print the forms found in the Packet for Substitute Instructional Aides
  • Read and complete the forms
  • Call Jana Barhorst to schedule an appointment - (937) 498-1354, ext. 7002

The Substitute Instructional Aide Handbook is a resource of helpful information to reference as you begin substituting in Shelby County ESC classrooms.

STEP 2:

Your BCI and/or FBI fingerprinting background checks can be done through the Shelby County ESC office by appointment only. Cost for BCI - $30.00; FBI - $30.00; Both BCI & FBI - $60.00.

If using another facility that offers background checks, make sure that your fingerprinting results get marked as a “direct copy” to ODE and your paper copy gets mailed to the Shelby County ESC office.

If you hold an existing substitute license/permit or a standard teaching license, you should provide to our office copies of your BCI and FBI reports. The reports must be no older than one year (365 days) from the date of your substitute application.

STEP 3:

Complete your ONLINE License/Permit Application at the Ohio Department of Education’s website.

  • Follow the instructions in creating a Safe Account and Applying for a License/Permit online.
  • “How To” videos and PDF documents are available on ODE’s website.
  • Mark the Shelby County Educational Service Center or IRN#049742 as your designated e-signer.
  • Your License/Permit will be approved by the Shelby County ESC Superintendent upon completion of Step 1 (submitting your substitute application).
  • Have your substitute license/permit mailed to the Shelby County ESC.
  • You will be paying for your license/permit with a credit card through the ODE website.
  • If you are a first time applicant, your original college transcript showing your bachelors degree needs to be mailed directly to ODE in a college provided sealed envelope.
